I finished reading this book today. I couldn’t put it down. I was challenged, inspired, confused, convinced, unconvinced, rewarded, taught, and more. I’ve had many thoughts about my Christian faith and how it reconciles with science. Bob helped me sort out some things, question others, taught me things and more. If you’ve ever questioned your faith, what the Bible says vs what science or non-believers say, this is a must read. Thank you Bob Shupe. You’ve given me a gift that will last my lifetime and provided me a gift to share with other.
Family, classmates, friends, neighbors and fellow believers and non-believers; I extend my strongest encouragement to purchase a copy and take your time reading and thinking about what Bob has put in print.
Between 2 Breaths … the Seasons of Creation is an expansive book on theology and science covering Genesis to Revelations. Bob asks, “Who is right, faith or science?” He notes that Christians feel they are in a position where they have to reject science to accept the Bible. His book takes four major themes, theology-God, Christology-Christ, ecclesiology-the church, and eschatology-the coming of Christ (which he presents as four seasons), and examines each area in the light of faith and science. His goal is to create a platform for dialogue and discussion about what the Bible says and what science believes. I believe this book provides a way for Christians to think about their Christian faith in the context of a science based world. Bob gives his readers ways to think about their faith and not reject commonly held secular views about our world and universe. Between 2 Breaths gives its readers new ways to think about the stories of the Bible, presenting new understanding about Christian faith and the challenges of science.
Between Two Breath by Bob Shupe is a fresh and vibrant look at the need for science and spirituality to discover ways they can inform each other with truth. He clearly argues that the scientists and theologians have nothing to worry about by entering into honest open-minded dialogue. If you are looking for a book that will challenge you to read the scriptures with fresh eyes, this is the book for you. If you want to discover the questions that non-believers are asking, this is the book for you. It articulates many valid questions about how science and faith look at the same question and provides reasonable points of agreement. If you wonder how the three persons of the trinity interact with each other, this book is for you. If you wonder what was happening during the time before the creation of our cosmos, this book should stimulate your thinking. If you have forgotten much of what you learned the first time you read the Bible, this book will tweak your memory. If you want a book as a resource for evangelism, Shupe gives adequate content to approach people who struggle with disbelief. If you are looking for a book that will affirm everything you already believe, you will likely be disappointed. If you are looking for an easy read, you will be challenged to consider the fact that the simple is not always the best for the soul or for spiritual growth. I loved this book as I traveled with the author from before time, through a careful replay of the covenants of faith, and a glimpse of spiritual experiences yet to come. I highly recommend this book. I challenge readers to invite Christians, people of other faiths, and unbelievers to sit around a table to discuss the content of Between Two Breaths. Between Two Breaths provokes, even demands, discussion and will effectively serve for Sunday school classes, small group discussions, and coffee-time bantering. Bob Shupe speaks to churches and individuals with ample solutions to keep everyone busy toward the goal of becoming better Christians. I loved this book and will return to it again and again.
